<title>The influence of the new practices of bride price on the marriage institution among the Acoli people in Aswa county, Gulu district</title>

<description>The influence of the new practices of bride price on the marriage institution among the Acoli people in Aswa county, Gulu district
Adoch, Kevin Sonia
The institution of bride price has been changing over time &#13;
depending on changes in society. Economic conditions, societal &#13;
structures, institutions, and family characteristics have &#13;
brought about these new patterns. The general objective of the &#13;
study was to investigate the influence of the new practices of &#13;
bride price on the marriage institution among the Acoli &#13;
people.The study was guided by identifying the new patterns of &#13;
bride price practices, the effect of the new practices of bride &#13;
price on the marriage trends, the new practices of bride price &#13;
have affected the rate of marriage today and the new practices &#13;
of bride price have affected the stability of marriage. &#13;
In the first objective, the study found that the institution of &#13;
bride price has been changing in trends, practices, and &#13;
meanings. The nature and amount of resources exchanged has also &#13;
been changing over time. The study therefore concluded that &#13;
whereas some communities have tended to increase the resources &#13;
exchanged to exorbitant levels, others have altogether done away &#13;
with it due changes in marriage and familial arrangements. In &#13;
the second objective, research found that the price for &#13;
legitimately marrying a bride has become extremely expensive for &#13;
many young couples due to the extreme financial demands &#13;
required. It was concluded that this has led to increasing &#13;
unofficial marital relationships especially among the urban &#13;
dwellers. In the third objective it was found that due to the &#13;
changing patterns in the bride price, many young people are &#13;
choosing to stay single for more than they want in order to &#13;
avoid paying the hefty bride prices set by the families of their &#13;
love interest. In the fourth objective, it was found out that &#13;
marriage is an alliance between two families that for the bride &#13;
and for the groom. It was concluded that failure to produce a &#13;
bride price or account for the fine almost always means the &#13;
marriage is illegitimate. &#13;
The researcher recommended that the term ‘bride price’ should be &#13;
replaced with the term ‘dowry’ because the term is demeaning to &#13;
women. There should be better mutual understanding between the &#13;
parties during the bargaining process. The changes and &#13;
commercialization of bride price are mainly related to the &#13;
adoption of Western norms and values of commodities. Educating &#13;
communities about the traditional meaning of bride price is &#13;
essential.

<title>Communal conflicts and peaceful extra judicial settlements among refugees. Case study: of refugees in Nakivale refugee settlement, Isingiro district</title>

<description>Communal conflicts and peaceful extra judicial settlements among refugees. Case study: of refugees in Nakivale refugee settlement, Isingiro district
Arinda, Henrietta
This study aimed at studying Communal conflicts and peaceful extra &#13;
judicial settlements among refugees using a case study of Nakivale &#13;
Refugee Settlement, Isingiro District. A descriptive research &#13;
method called a case study research design was used for this &#13;
study.&#13;
The study had a sample size of 50 respondents and these included &#13;
Refugee NGO workers, Refugee community representatives and members &#13;
of the general refugee community among others. The respondents &#13;
were given different sets of questionnaires and interview guide &#13;
questions. The two sets of questionnaires and interview guide &#13;
questions administered to the refugee respondents and the &#13;
officials were then used to collect raw data that has formed the &#13;
basis of this research report. A slightly mixed data collection &#13;
methodology that included a limited aspect of qualitative research &#13;
were used, in that; some in-depth interviews were conducted with &#13;
the refugee NGO workers as well as the refugees, ostensibly used &#13;
to corroborate information got from the questionnaires. &#13;
Documentary sources of data were also very crucial in &#13;
corroborating in information from both the in-depth interviews as &#13;
well as the questionnaires. The study is divided into chapters, &#13;
with chapter four; presenting findings and analyses and chapter &#13;
five; drawing conclusions and recommendation. &#13;
In the first objective, the study concluded that electoral &#13;
conflicts, structural, interest and interest conflicts were some &#13;
of the forms of communal conflicts among others. In the second &#13;
objective of the study, it was concluded that the common factors &#13;
for the rise in communal conflicts among refugees living in &#13;
refugee settlements in Uganda were among others; weak law and &#13;
order, economic crisis, disputes over land, population explosion &#13;
and ethnicity. In the third objective, It was concluded that; &#13;
mediation, reconciliation, adoption of use of arbitration method &#13;
and rehabilitation among others were the most important ways &#13;
through which non legal settlements can be used in the study area.&#13;
It was recommended that; all concerned parties must ensure the &#13;
availability of the necessary finance to design a national extra &#13;
judicial settlements policy and implement it and encourage all &#13;
communal conflict-affected communities to engage in reconciliation &#13;
dialogue.

<title>Decentralization and education service delivery in government aided primary schools in Mbale district: A case study: Nyondo sub-county</title>

<description>Decentralization and education service delivery in government aided primary schools in Mbale district: A case study: Nyondo sub-county
Wangisi, Sam
education service delivery in Government Aided Primary Schools &#13;
using Nyondo Sub-county as a case study. The focus of the &#13;
study was that in-spite of massive resources allocated to the &#13;
education sector, output indicators remain appalling. The &#13;
research employed a cross sectional study design utilizing &#13;
both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. &#13;
The study findings revealed that there is a significant &#13;
relationship between political decentralization and primary &#13;
education service delivery; fiscal decentralization has a weak &#13;
explanatory power to account for variability in primary &#13;
education service delivery in Nyondo sub-county and a further &#13;
weaker relationship between administrative decentralization &#13;
and primary education service delivery. Resulting from the &#13;
study findings, it was realized that decentralization has a &#13;
limited influence on education service delivery in government &#13;
aided primary schools in Nyondo Sub-county given that there is &#13;
still over dependency on the district and central government &#13;
transfers to finance service delivery. It is therefore, highly &#13;
recommended that local governments need to take advantage of &#13;
positive elements of decentralization through policy shifts &#13;
and innovative means of resource management so as to place &#13;
themselves aptly in the arena of current millennium agenda.

<link>http://dissertations.umu.ac.ug/xmlui/handle/123456789/1308</link>

Namutebi, Brenda

improving the water and Sanitation Services in Mpigi district.&#13;
The study objectives were; to establish the role of management &#13;
in improving water and sanitation services in Mpigi district; &#13;
to examine the extent the role of management has played in &#13;
water and sanitation services among the people in Mpigi &#13;
district and to find out the possible management measures to &#13;
improve water and sanitation services.&#13;

paradigm in which a case study research design was employed to &#13;
collect data from 57 (fifty seven) respondents using &#13;
structured questionnaires, interviews and focus group &#13;
discussion.&#13;
The study found out that management has an important role to &#13;
play in improving water and sanitation Services through using &#13;
mechanisms to track water resource consumption and &#13;

role towards improving water and sanitation services among the &#13;
people by ensuring that the time factor manifests itself in &#13;
the water and sanitation service, ensuring efficient and &#13;
effective deployment of resources when they are needed. &#13;
Additionally, Management can improve water and sanitation &#13;
services through encouraging community participation since it &#13;
is important in the project implementation processes. &#13;

community members are able to make decisions regarding &#13;
resource use and allocation, capable of coordinating the &#13;
implementation of planned activities, able to demand for both &#13;
physical and financial accountabilities, capable of managing &#13;
resources of the water and sanitation projects many others. It &#13;
